THERAPY AND THE ARTS

Counselling and Therapy

The therapeutic space provides an environment to explore and gain more awareness of past and present experiences and what is getting in the way of you reaching your highest potential. It’s an opportunity to learn more about yourself and how you function in relationships and assist in making more meaningful, authentic relationships. The therapeutic relationship gives a safe space to allow openness and deeper understanding and is a chance to bring up difficult memories and emotions that it can be hard to face and make sense of alone.

Art Therapy

Some people find using creativity a useful tool in sessions. No previous art experience is necessary and there is no pressure to work with the arts. Using imagination, metaphor and art can aid the therapeutic process by becoming more conscious of stuck patterns of behaviour that are no longer serving us and this process of change can create new neural pathways in the brain. Play can block both anxiety and aggression chemicals in the brain.

The art forms used can include:

  • drawing/painting/craft

  • clay/3D/nature installation

  • poetry/writing

  • drama/story/puppets/dreamwork

  • music

  • somatic bodywork/dance/movement

  • play/figures/sand tray

  • therapeutic aid cards/games/attachment play

Ecotherapy

I am also an Ecotherapist. Ecotherapy is the practice of helping people develop a symbiotic relationship with the natural world to further therapeutic growth, understand our own inner nature, deepen awareness of our impact and inspire respect and passion for taking more care of nature. It can involve a variety of modalities including connection to the changing earth cycles and recognising how they affect us.
